I was going to pose this question over on the Yahoo board, but since I'm most always at a loss for things to do on this blog, will do it here :).
When the moderator of the Yahoo board was first asked why Zanzibar Sunset, a song originally recorded and released in the early 80's, would be used for the title of the new CD, which reportedly was to contain new material, his reply was: "Zanzibar is the only song from an older album that is currently in the running, so it isn't going to be "all new re-records of the 1983 album" if that is what anyone is afraid of. I promise you this is not "Night In Re-Record City"!"
I thought fair enough, and actually great news, in one respect. On the other hand, I've made a list (below) of songs recorded since their last LP of new material. I've noted the source, and also whether or not it's still being played live, in concert.
So yesterday, someone must have been reading my mind when he asked pretty much the same question that I was going to pose; what about those CD-Rs recorded between 2004 and 2007, as well as the “bootleg” concert CD. What’s to happen with those originals and covers that never had a “real” release? Are they gone for good? Assuming that the CD-Rs will not be put back on the shelf in their on-line Electric Paintbox store, a bunch of people just plain won't get to hear these songs for the first time. And trust me, there are some great songs there that aren't/haven't been performed live, so if you missed them 5 years ago, might be history now.
Here's the thing. Let me know if any of the following warrant consideration for inclusion on the new CD. That's tough if you've never heard them, of course, but I think one of the concerns would be that there's great material already recorded that will perhaps be missed if it's not included on either this, or a future, CD for mass consumption. Just trying to see if there are common favorites.
Tell you what. If I can get more that 10 comments, we can do a poll, the results of which I'll pass on. But I need some response.

Well, any or all of them really! Easier to say which ones I'm not so fond of - All the Harvests (tho I think the recent version is much better than the '87) and This House is Haunted. If I absolutely had to pick a top 5: Rien Ne Va Plus, Summertime (Ain't it Fun), Lady Wants a Gentleman, Purple Haze and Some Small Town. And I am fortunate enough to have all the discs/CD-R's, so I'm going on music *and* lyrics.
ReplyDeleteWow, Tony! You're making me work. Are we going for just five? Quick look and in shorthand: Small Town, Something Else, Water is Wide, Doesn't matter any More, Take out Insurance, Doghouse, Don't look Back, Dr. Livingstone.
ReplyDeleteIf you run a poll, please, please let us name several. Thanks, Janet
