As a former softball buddy and boss, Bob Henderson used to say "You can't make this stuff up." Dave Barry says the same thing.
The real story behind "The Nearness of You" goes something like this. I'm doing this from memory, so any corrections would be appreciated. Chad and Jeremy are in the studio, recording their second LP. The owner of World Artists comes in, and asks them to record The Nearness of You as part of the LP. Chad and Jeremy decline, already feeling burdened as ballad singers. The guy leaves (I can't remember his name, but I guess you could look it up), and I guess C&J think it's over. But no, the guy comes back and asks a favor. Says he has someone else to do the song, but needs a demo. Long story short, Chad and Jeremy do the demo, but decide to ham it up so he can't use it as a C&J track. And, as we know, the guy bootlegged it anyway. So, I guess there were just 2 takes, both done with mocking vocals, and both eventually leaked.
So this is my week so far. Yesterday, we go for a cookout at the beach, and I roll a cooler full of beer over my glasses, which, having dropped from my pocket, were lying on asphalt, and now are pretty much scratched forever. Today, I receive an email from Chad Stuart, requesting my phone number (remember my post earlier about the wonderfulness of email?), and I get the true story of The Nearness of You. I am not making this up :).
So, even neater? I say that I know you joked around during the beginning of the song, but by the end of the song you really came together with some sweet vocals. If I recall correctly, he said as kids they probably couldn't have done a great version, but probably could do it now :). Yes, I think that's true.
Gotta go and re-listen to the song with the story in mind. You should too :).
Lest I go on too long, I gotta go check and see if the salmon is defrosted, and the Newcastle cold. Check back sometime, I was gonna do a post on my experiences with Distant Shores, but I had to re-buy the LP version to stay perfectly honest. And that should be here soon.

Interesting story, Tony! I am looking forward to your "Distant Shores" post. The more I read about Chad and Jeremy, the more I like them!
